Alcohol and drug incidents: how to be prepared

Reacting quickly and responsibly to an alcohol or drug incident can save lives.

The incident every organiser would rather avoid

Where people celebrate, people drink, and at some events more than alcohol alone is used. As an organiser you cannot prevent that entirely, but you can be prepared for it.

Why this differs from ordinary first aid

Someone under the influence is hard to assess. A person can look reasonably well and still deteriorate quickly, or be restless without anything medically serious going on. It takes knowledge of substances, combinations and the signals that point to a genuine emergency.

What AZADI involves

AZADI stands for acute care during alcohol and drug incidents. It is a separate certification scheme developed for event medical care. An AZADI medic learns to recognise, assess, care safely and refer on in time.

What you can arrange as an organiser

  • A calm, screened-off place where someone can recover and be monitored.
  • Enough free drinking water and shade or a cool space.
  • Clear agreements with security: do not remove people, hand them over to the care team.
  • AZADI-trained medics in the staffing, not as a separate service but integrated into the team.
  • A fixed escalation route: who calls the emergency number and who meets the ambulance.

Record what happens

Record every incident: the time, what was found, what was done and how it ended. That is not only careful towards the visitor, it also helps you in the evaluation with the municipality and in preparing the next edition.

We arrange it with you

At dance events and festivals we include AZADI care in the proposal as standard. We also train in basic AZADI care and to AZADI instructor level.
